Women, Including Those with Serious Health Issues, Can Eliminate Dyspareunia or Painful Sex with Non-Hormonal Solution

Replens Long-Lasting Vaginal Moisturizer relieves the chronic vaginal dryness that can contribute to dyspareunia

CEDAR RAPIDS (August 14, 2013): Dyspareunia, or more commonly known as pain during sexual intercourse, may afflict as many as one in four women. Up to 45 percent of the 65 million menopausal and post-menopausal American women experience pain during sex, according to the North American Menopause Society (NAMS). In addition, up to 90% of women who are cancer survivors may experience chronic vaginal dryness, dyspareunia and other sexual challenges, while more than 40% of women with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes may suffer with sexual dysfunction.

As published in the American Society for Reproductive Medicine’s Clinical Journal (SRM), Dr. Don Dizon, specialist in medical gynecologic oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital states that "non-hormonal vaginal moisturizers and lubricants are helpful in optimizing hydration of the vaginal mucosal membranes" and relieving the chronic vaginal dryness that can contribute to dyspareunia. Dr. Dizon’s study focused on women who are cancer survivors, but its conclusions are welcome news for all dyspareunia sufferers.

The study reviewed and evaluated available vaginal lubricants and moisturizers. It found that Replens Long-Lasting Vaginal Moisturizer is a "non-hormonal alternative for vaginal atrophy and has been shown to decrease dyspareunia, improve vaginal dryness, and increase the maturation index, when used regularly." The composition of Replens, the study continued, "binds directly to the vaginal epithelium. The hydrating property restores the vaginal pH … and reduces the incidence of vaginal dryness, itching, and irritation."

While vaginal dryness can be treated with estrogen through hormone replacement therapy, many conclude that the risks of hormone replacement therapy simply don't outweigh the benefits, especially when a very effective non-hormonal option is available. A study in The New England Journal of Medicine previously reported that over-the-counter Replens is as effective at treating vaginal dryness as prescription hormones, stating that Replens "provided relief of vaginal dryness symptoms that was equivalent to that of vaginal estrogen."

Replens is medically recognized as one of the most effective ways to address vaginal dryness issues that can be major sexual health and comfort concerns for many women and can play a key role in enhancing women’s quality of life– whether they are suffering from serious health problems, or simply dealing with everyday health and wellness.
